The apples fell.
The sheep came down main street.
The leaves were and are glorious!
Except for this one. My poor ash tree out front. Half dead, frozen leaves on the tree.
I have not taken any photos of all the pretty leaves, but they've been great. Cotton woods are ablaze, the fruit trees are aglow...the streets and sidewalks are crunchy and filled with leaves. I pedal my bike through them daily and just love it.
Happy Halloween and happy fall!

Sunday and the drive home, Oct 21 and 22, 2018
Sunday morning was Church. Special Church. The Primary Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation is the culmination of a (almost) year's worth of learning in the Primary. Songs, talks. Nearly every child participates, from the 3 and 4 year olds to the 12 year olds. I really enjoyed it. Ella sang in a small ensemble or two and even had a (6 word) solo that she did very well. It was soft and sweet and she did it. And then Primary sharing time was the kids' opportunities to share their favorite things about General Conference from the previous weeks. They have a really LARGE Primary in the Canyon Springs Ward. Huge. Lotsa kids. Tandy's Primary President, remember. So she probably wanted to just collapse after church, but instead she came home and cooked us some cheese quesadillas for a light lunch/dinner, packed us some cookies and was said our goodbyes and were off by about 1:30 pm on Sunday.
I did ask Damian and Tandy to place their wagers now on how many times we'd get lost on the way home. I guessed 2, tandy said 4 and Damian said 6.
Well, the fact of the matter was, were were NEVER lost; however, we did miss the 1604 off ramp. I told Mike to exit, he did, and then he said, "No, I don't think we're supposed to be here," and merged back onto to 281. And then we passed under the overpass labled "1604." Hmmm. So we just went on down to the 410 and over to the 10. No big deal. The fact is, with all that construction, there is NO signage indicating where the exit for the 1604 even is, so it's not surprising that we missed it. Again. It's kind of a mess over there. But that's the only time we had any questions or concerns about where we were going the entire time! THE ENTIRE TIME on our way home. Smooth sailing all the way.
We drove Sunday afternoon and evening, and made it to Truth or Consequences, NM by about 10 pm. The rooms at our Travelodge hotel were adequate and cheap. Beds fairly comfy and the sheets clean. Floors were kind of icky - looking. We didn't even watch any TV. Mike had bought a San Antonio newspaper before we left town and really enjoyed reading the whole thing that night. I went to sleep and slept solidly until about 5:10 a.m. Mike, on the other hand, was up every 2 hours. I forgot to mention that he wasn't feeling well on Sunday morning. He kind of had upset tummy and was running to the bathroom quite a lot. He and Eric left church after Sacrament meeting; Mike to get some Immodium and Eric to get packed and ready to leave. His flight back to Las Vegas was that after noon / evening. But, by the time we left Damian and Tandy's house on Sunday afternoon, Mike was doing a bit better and we were back to our old icky travel diets before too long. Dr. Pepper, fudge and cookies. Doesn't sound like anything someone with an upset stomach needs to be eating, does it?
We had breakfast at the hotel around 7 am on Monday the 22nd and hit the road again. No questions or concerns about which way to go, no close calls with gasoline. We decided to have dinner at Jacob Lake near Grand Canyon. We'd snacked all day, though. I think I've gained 10 pounds this week. I don't even want to know. Ugh. But it was fun! Yay. Love that junk food. Tandy did fix lovely meals while we were there, too, but then things just got busy and we were on the run all the time!
We pulled into Pam's around 8 pm, unloaded her stuff and then headed down the road in Kanarraville and NEARLY hit a few deer that ran across the street in front of us. Luckily, Mike was not going fast and neither was the other car coming in the opposite direction. We both skidded and both of us came to a complete stop and the deer crossed right between us. There was only about 5 feet between our car and the other. We both stayed in our own lanes, but it was good that we both stopped in time and didn't swerve and didn't crunch our vehicles on the deer or each other. Stupid deer.
Mike drove through a small amount of rain in Arizona this afternoon/evening, but really the roads were mostly dry all the way there and back. There had been rain right before us, as we could see that the washes had water in them and sometimes the road was still wet on the sides, but our drive was very uneventful on the way home. We had cloud cover for a good amount of the drive time, too. So I would say that it was fairly un eventful both there and back, other than directional difficulties and a bit of a gas scare on the way to San Antonio.
We pulled into our drive by about 8:15 pm. on Monday, October 22. Home again, home again, safe and sound. We don't need to drive to San Antonio again. We'll fly next time. But it was a fun trip and we're so glad to be home safe and sound. I think Mike drove 9/10 of the time. He is a driving machine. And we listened to three volumes of "Children of the Promise" by Dean Hughes, as well as a Louis L'amour novel AND 2/3 of of Josi Kilpak culinary mystery ("Rocky Road").

Saturday, October 20, 2018. San Antonio
Saturday is a special day, it's the day we get ready for Sunday.
Among other things. But Mike and I are on "vacation" so we slept in. I heard Braeden come in to his bedroom around 7:30 or 8 am (and we were still in bed, though I was awake by then. Their whole family was going to go clean the chapel because it was their turn. There should have been other families there to help, but there were not. I wish I would have just got up and got Mike up and gone and helped them. There were supposed to be about 4 other assigned families. Little Liebhardt's were the only ones who showed up.
Ella had a soccer game that day. She had to be at her field (No Where close to their home, but I have no idea where we were-- Lady Bird Johnson Recreation Fields--). Lexi had a band competition that day at yet another stadium but it was fairly close to the Recreation center. She had to be dropped off at 1-ish at her school. So it was a "divide and conquer" kind of Day. Tandy took Damian's truck and took Lexi to her school, which was where I thought the band competition was, but it was not. It was at a school district stadium. It's all so complicated. Damian took the rest of us with him to Ella's soccer field. He'd never been there before. It's a huge recreation area with many fields. We were prepared with camp chairs and jackets, but it was fairly mild and sometimes the sun even came out. For a minute or two. But it was chilly when the sun went behind the clouds.
Ella's soccer game began at 1:30 and Tandy seemed to think she'd get there close to the time that the game started, and she was there fairly close to the beginning. Ella's team (they are all about 10 and 11 years old) were ALL about 6 to 12 inches taller than the girls on the other team they were playing. They played with ONE referee, which is highly unusual, but it happened anyway. They played on a much larger field than they were used to playing on, AND the wind was an issue at times. Oh well. Ella's team did win with a score of about 6 to 2 I think.
After that, Eric had asked that we be able to eat at yet another Texas institution, that one being "Whataburger." They happen to be one of the sponsors of Lexi's marching band. And the band thing was next; however, there were complications in that Damian had purchased some concert tickets quite some time ago with the intent of taking his whole family to an out door country music concert. Only it was at the same time as Lexi's competition and ( of course) clear across town. We had come to see Lexi perform in the competition. Damian didn't really want to waste all the tickets. So after we we all ate at Whataburger for a very late lunch at 3 pm (good burgers and fries), Damian took Ella and went to the concert in his truck and the rest of us went to the UIL Marching Band Competion at Heroes Stadium. We stayed from about 3:30 to 6:30 and saw about 7 or so bands perform. They were all excellent. I closed my eyes that night as I was going to sleep and saw twirling flags of the many color guard kids we saw for those hours of competition. Flags and marching feet danced acrossed my eyelids as I tried to sleep that night. They are amazing musicians and athletes. Big bands, not-so-big bands, but all were pretty dang good. They do take it seriously here, you know. That and football.
So, Soccer and band. That filled up the day. THEN Tandy had to bake about 200 cookies for primary children and their special guests for church the next day. She'd promised that if they (Primary Children) brought a guest to the Primary Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation, they would have a treat. So Eric and I helped her with that. Ella and Damian came back fairly late from the concert, as it got smokey and a bit too wild to have your 10 year old daughter at, so they left it early and yet were home later than us because of the drive, you know...and it started after we were out of the band competition, so it may have been possible to do both...but we were so tired and poor Tandy was hauling all of us around... Oh, their lives are so complicated and busy, it just exhausts me to even think about it.
Above: Eric and Tandy baking cookies. Do you even know anybody besides Tandy who owns two KitchenAid mixers??? I wish I would have taken a photo of all the finished cookies. I think 215 was the final count. Or something close to that. And all perfect.
That night, I decided to take a little dip in the pool. But only for about 5 seconds. Just for fun and excitement. Why not? I had to wash my hair for church the next day, anyway. ;-) Eric took a video. I'm sure he'll share if you ask him too. I actually jumped in twice. I'd handed my phone to Braeden to take a photo and when I got out, he said, "Oh! I missed it!" So I did it again. Invigorating. Yes, the nice hot shower afterward felt delightful and I was ready to drop into bed. ZZZzzzz

The pool was 64 degrees F.
Final number of the evening, Claudia Taylor Johnson High School Marching Band. Go Jaguars! Lexi's down there somewhere.
Outside Whataburger. Why do they always look like this??? !!
That was a lot of musicians. Bus loads. Dozens of bus loads.
Sorry the pictures are out of order.

Texas, Continued. Friday the 19th
You know the saying, "Everything's bigger in Texas," right? Well, it's true. I've lived in Texas before. It's true of the bugs, of the rain, of the wind, the people, the smiles, the trees (sort of), the amount of roads and people, for sure.
San Antonio is the country's 7th largest city. It's a "sprawler," as you might imagine. There's not a huge concentration of high-rises in the downtown area, but there are plenty of suburbs and surrounding towns. I did notice when looking at San Antonio on a road map when Damian and Tandy first moved here that there are two freeway loops around the city, not just one; an inner and an outer--soon to be a third, I hear. It's really big. And they have to drive everywhere. There's not a metro system, though they do have busses. Just drive. And drive. And drive.
And they do drive. Damian has to drive a "fur piece" to get to his jobs. He will be changing hospitals again soon. Still a far way away on the other side of town.
Tandy has to do the carpool thing and she drives a lot. And it's not just "Drop the kid off at school and pick them up afterwards." She does share in a carpool with others, and this is why:
Lexi has to be dropped off at Seminary; Lexi has to be taken from Seminary to School. Lexi has to be picked up from Band AFTER school (no bus).
Braeden actually catches a school bus in front of his house, on his own and quite early. But he's always out there on time. But he usually has football practice after school so he has to be picked up from that and brought home. If there's a game, he has to be brought home from the school after the game, unless it was like Tuesday when they were able to take him home from the game themselves so we could all go to dinner together.
Braeden also plays soccer and there are those games AND PRACTICES to consider. I think that does not go on during football season, however.
Ella goes to 5th grade elementary school very nearby, but the roads and traffic between their home and the school make it rather unsafe to walk there, so Tandy Drives Ella and one neighbor boy there and back. Some days this week they were out early for parent/teacher conferences, so that breaks into the schedule.
Ella also plays soccer, so there are practices and games to drive her to and from. This week, the fields have been soaked and under water, so there were not practices this week. I do believe they have a game on Saturday, however.
Yowza. I'd go crazy with a schedule like that. And like I said, they are car POOLS, meaning there's other folks participating. The only problem is, one of the other mothers just had her baby on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, so that pulled her out of the pool. Another lady wasn't available since her tooth was requiring some major attention by a dentist at one point when Tandy needed a backup because she was playing tour guide for us. And Tandy picks up the slack. Well, she picks up her kid. And other kids. Stinky football players, grouchy tired band kids.
Speaking of pools, we've been monitoring the pool temperature at Damian and Tandy's house. Our best bet to use their outdoor pool would have been the day we got here. It's been getting colder in temp by the day. Now it's in the low 60's. No swimming for us! I don't know that we have seen the sun since we've been here. Rain and clouds the whole time.
**************************
Friday, we slept in (Like we usually do on vacation!), Damian had some work to do briefly in the morning, Tandy really slept in, and us old folks kind of sat around and snoozed and read and relaxed all morning. I started another Josi Kilpack audio book. Kids were in school. Damian and Tandy took all of us (because Eric is here, too) to another Texas institution supporting that adage about everything being BIGGER in Texas. Buc -ee's is a gas station. Only it is ONE BIG gas station. It was hilarious. I smiled all the way through it. Mike called it the ultimate truck stops without trucks. Stuckey's on steroids. It was something, that's for sure. It has 140 gas pumps, a double row of them...and food and clothes and kitch galore. We had lunch there, but had to eat it in the car. ha ha. Really. That's what you do at most gas stations, right? Grab and go? No exception here. It's truly something to behold. And the barbeque sandwich I had was superb! Yum. I bought some postcards to send to grandkids away from Texas, and some peanut patties to bring home to my staff. Wow.
AND THEN, we drove way out in the country in the far north east areas around San Antonio and saw wonderful country roads and lands where my ancesters settled from Germany. The Wetz and Koehler families are familiar names in the New Braunfels area are replete with those two names. Well, maybe not replete, but at least there are street names and a welding shop was named "Koehler Welding" that we drove by. Damian was so sweet to take us there to see that! It was raining, the roads were rough (and exciting-- Eric and I were in the back-back of the van and we said "WHEEEE!" several times!!), and Tandy needed to return to -- guess what? -- Pick up Ella from school! I think that is an everyday thing for her, as in no-one to share it with? That means it's not a pool. I guess. It's just a big responsibility, that's for sure! So we hurried back (a forty minute drive from where we were), they dropped everyone off, and off she went again to get in line to pick Ella up. It's a procedure. She has to have a NUMBER (in her case, two, since she's picking up 2 kids) tag on her front dash, drives into the bottom of the lot area, a monitor sees the number, passes it up via an app (like texting it, but not) to the office area, they call the number, the kid with that number (Ella and her neighbor) come from their class or somewhere to the waiting area, wait for 10 minutes until thier ride finally snakes along the long line of cars and arrives at the pick up spot. And, yes, Ella did have to wait extra long. The line of cars snakes down the drive, down the hill, onto the street; the wait is long for parents and kids alike. T'would be way easier to walk, were it not for crazy traffic and construction blocking the safe(er) sidewalks. Crazy.
After lunch and treats at Buc-ee's (Bucky the Beaver is the mascot), we wanted to go hear Lexi play in the band at the Johnson High School football game. It started at 7:30 and was a long drive away. Lexi never came home from school. Band suported provide dinners the band kids can order and purchase in advance, so they are fed for the evening. The only people who ended up going to the away game were me, Tandy and Pam. Eric made arrangements to attend a play his friend was in ("Avenue Q"), Ella went to a friend's house, Braeden and Damian opted out because it was just rainey and icky. Mike needed to take Eric to the play, which was kind of on the way to the footbal game, but not really on the way. Kind of would have been out of the way since Tandy had never even been to this high school in South San Antonio... it was quite a ways away. So the boys stayed in at watched a movie together.
BUT
It was not raining there! It had rained, but we had stadium seats to sit on instead of wet aluminum bleachers (thanks, Tandy!), so it ended up being a beautiful night for the traditional "Friday Night Lights" of all Texas towns and cities. Football. We sat in the midst of the Football parents and felt a little conspicuous because we (Pam and I, at least) were there to see and hear the band, really. We were not able to see Alexa until they went out on the field. 320 members makes for a very big band. They play well, but there's so much movement and from the "back" where we were on the visitor side of the field, I couldn't tell if they were making shapes or what. But they sound good and look good. The home team also had a good-looking, though much smaller, band and they marched and played well, too.
Woodwinds were going home at half-time, leaving the brass and percussion behind in the stands (cutting the band's size in half, basically), so we left after half-time, too, as Tandy had to pick up Lexi from their high school and take her home. So we did that, after stopping at McDonalds for a snack on the way home. We'd not had dinner. I didn't need much, after that nice big lunch sandwich and snacking on goodies after lunch at home.
we were home by 9:30 or ten pm, stayed up talking to Pam and Tandy till way too late.
But Friday was another fun-filled day in Texas!

Grab and go? No exception here. It's truly something to behold. And the barbeque sandwich I had was superb! Yum. I bought some postcards to send to grandkids away from Texas, and some peanut patties to bring home to my staff. Wow.
I'm holding a squawking rubber chicken (the clerk at checkout said, "Please. Buy them all." An indication of how irritating they all are. ha) AND a bag of something called, "Slap ya MAMA" . I don't even know what it was, and I didn't buy it. I did buy the chicken. Well, Tandy did. Somehow it ended up in her basket. Thanks, Tandy.
Lexi (top left) with some friends and their Jaguar mascot.
I caught a t-shirt thrown into the audience during the game.
Tandy, Me and Pam at the game.
Mike standing in front of a display of the Buc-ee's mascot, Buc-ee the Beaver.
Meandering down country roads in New Braunfels, Texas, where the Koehler and Wetz families are from.
There are farms and meadows and pastures.
And lots of rain on this particular day.
We stopped at the end of "Wetz Road" to take this photo. The street sign didn't exist at the beginning of the street...so it is good that we found this. It is also good that Tandy and Damian know how to use the Google Map and GPS things better than I do, as they were actually able to find these streets.
Damian has also found the New Braunfels cemetery where some of these people are buried (the Autrey relatives).
I will share those photos and more when Damian and Tandy share them with me. Hopefully soon. :-)

Thursday, October 18, 2018...trip to Springtown, TX
We drove up to Springtown, Texas today to have a visit with David and Laura. It was supposed to be rainy and flooding and we were kind of nervous about going on that drive. But it ended up being very pleasant. We only had light rain for the last hour and a half of our drive home.
It was overcast, we could see how many rivers and streams were running high, but the drive to their house was uneventful.
Green slime.

enjoying some time on the porch
David took me and Mike on a little tour of the property. There is something like SEAWEED growing on his ground!! It's green and kind of slimy, but definitely plant-like. At first glance, it looks dark like deer droppings and I was so puzzled as to why David would be picking up deer poop to show us. Weird. But it is not poop, just green some kind of plant life. All growing on what was one a coral reef, millions of years ago. That's a long time to be dormant.
Cactus, flowers, weeds and grass. And butterflies (below). Moths, little bitty ones, were fairly prevalent, too, as we tromped through the grasses.
Below. At one point, the GPS would have it appear that we were a little "off route," or perhaps flying to our destination. The road we were on was a new one, but we took it anyway (with directions from my phone's mapping app).
I think this pretty truck flower bed was in Marble Falls.
Green slime.
We were back at Damian's and Tandy's home by 8:30 pm or so. Way earlier than we thought we would be, but Laura does tire easily. We enjoyed lunch together, enjoyed our visit, they stuffed us with a gourmet cupcake, too. And then we headed home.
And guess who was there?
Eric! He flew in today and Tandy and Ella picked him up at the airport. I've known for a while now (because he accidentally let it slip while talking to Isie at our house one day about it--forgetting that I was in the next room!), but Mike was totally surprised. He did not surprise Tandy and family. Eric made arrangements with them a long time ago when he found this really great deal on a ticket from LAS to SAT.
We are looking forward to seeing a "Friday Night Lights" football game, plus a competition for Lexi. No soccer for Ella or Braeden (cancelled due to rain).
Wednesday 17th of October, 2018
Tandy was the hostess with the mostest again today. This day, Braeden chose to be off from school and he chose the spot for lunch, so we went to Kneaders. Yum. I only ate half my sandwich. After Ella was off of school, we all left Mike behind and Tandy, Pam, Ella, Braeden and me headed to downtown again. We walked around "The Pearl" area. It's a former brewery area, but now is another part of the "River Walk" and this area isn't so saturated with restaurants and such. There is more of walking and greenery and some fun sculptural things for entertainment. I thought "The Pearl" big can of beer up on the roof looked like a big can of olives. ha.
We stop to get some ice cream there at "Lick" and then walked along the river. Then we headed to the "Tower of the Americas" and rode to the top. It's big, the view was wonderful, but inside that observation deck it was HOT. Outside on the observation deck was cold. Then we came back for dinner. Tandy made us some lovely pasta. Damian was at work today, but home by 8 pm or so. And Lexi was home close to 9. Long days for those kids.
Mike and I headed to bed early since we had to head on a mini-road trip the following day. But here are a few photos of our adventures.

Walking along the river, and below is Braeden with his ice cream
There is part of the river walk that looked a bit like a fish hatchery. And there was an ampitheater area, too, with a stage.
Some of the bridges had some lovely steel sculptures, representing the movement of water.
This was a bus stop--Made from cypress tree and root.
Tandy is on the right, Ella on the left.
We had to walk down stairs through gaping jaws of this monster.
The waterfalls , the caves, the sculptures. It was entertaining.
See the face back in the cave, spewing out water?
The Alamo Dome is where Alexa will be doing her competition for band stuff later this year. It is right next to the Tower of the Americas.
Tandy was having a bit of a trial, getting us into the photo along with the tower (below)
Braeden and Tandy sitting at a table in the observation deck.
I am still working on those selfies. And the hair.
The oak trees had funny ROUND looking growths that were like spanish moss, but didn't hang down in strands. They were just balls.
Heading off to the tower to ride the elevator to the top. It's about 800 feet tall.
We were just admiring the fountains around the base of the tower. And the HUGE balls of foamy slime stuff of gunk. Pam grew up being told it was "Indian Soap."
Moss balls.
I think this is a cormorant sitting on a rock in the river close to a foot bridge.
They have sculpted arch (on top), caves below--complete with stalactites, and other decorations.
Oh. Well, I almost got the whole tower in the shot! It is tall.
Along the river walk, water cascades in the background.
Nice fall scene outside of the Tower of the Americas.
At the Pearl shopping (former brewery ) area, there is a street called "Emma Koehler". Otto Koehler was one of the founders of the brewery.
Along the river walk with the caves and sculptures, waterfalls, etc.
This is really a lamp. So now you can say you've seen me with a lampshade on my head. This was at our dinner at Lupe Tortilla's on Tuesday the 17th.
On Wednesday, when we went to the top of the Tower of the Americas, we found ZOLTAR!!! This was the fellow famous in the Tom Hanks movie, "Big." Loved that show.
Overlooking the city. Me, Braeden and Ella.
Me, trying to capture the tower in a photo. I think I did. It seemed to not have a wide enough foundation. It's not quite as tall as the Stratosphere, or maybe this one is slightly bigger than it, but the Stratosphere appears to have a wide and sturdy foundation due to the buildings built around the bottom of it and it kind of flares out at the bottom. This tower is just straight up and down, like a stick stuck into the ground with a big round building on top. It just seems top-heavy.
Tandy took this shot at the river of Ella, Pam, me and Braeden standing across the river from her. Wednesday the 17th.
Just joking around with Lexi-Lou after a long day at school.
Mike, Me, Ella at the Alamo. Tuesday.
Tandy and Ella with a costumed character at the Alamo.
Tower of the Americas, outside observation deck area. Cold and windy, but not as cold as the top of the Empire State Building last November!!
River Walk on Wednesday.
Alamo on Tuesday
Lunch at Auggie's on Tuesday.
Lunch at Auggie's on Tuesday. One big (half of a) Pig. The smoked pork and brisket was really good.
