Texas Liebhardts come to ski

They got here late Tuesday night, December 28. Wednesday they skiied with the Kraley's at Brian Head. After skiing we all went out to eat at the Pizza Factory.  Boy, was that place crowded!  And afterwards, the Liebhardt's came over for a little visit, we had Root Beer Floats, opened their Christmas gifts and looked at the pictures and videos that Damian took on his camera.

December Visits with Grandkids

Winter sunset beginnings. I was just going to go close the kitchen curtains and had to stop and admire the lovely sky and clouds.

Rachel and I were trying to get an updated pose (but I forgot about the second pair of sunglasses) for my Facebook Profile photo. There was one of me and Rachel when she was about three or four, and we're both wearing sunglasses. Same corner of the living room.

This airplane!  Such a great gift. Thank you, Gail, for leaving it here when Jonny outgrew it and/or you moved. It was a Christmas gift for Jonathan Owens when he was only about 7 months old (Emily's age!) and grandkids have been using it ever since--and Jonathan is now about 12 years old.  Quality stuff.

Nick, Kaylee, Rachel, Logan, Jane and Emily were here from Sunday the 26th through Wednesday morning the 29th.  Fun times!!

Bowling with the Liebhardt's :-)

It was fun to go with Nick and Kaylee and kids to the Cedar City Bowling lanes. And we go IN!  Crazy, because it was really crowded. The kids did great. Rachel won. She bowled THREE strikes!  It doesn't matter that she used the bumper sides in the lane, or that it just zig-zagged its way down the lane and happened to go very slowly and hit just that perfect pin to cause them all to tumble down. The points count! haha.

Logan mostly enjoyed spinning them in the waiting holder.
It was so funny that Rachel had picked out a bright pink bowling ball to use. The ball-return mechanism was being shared with the team to our right, and they had NO concept of ball ownership.  They kept taking that bright pink ball--even in the middle of Kaylee's turn. It was so weird.
Baby Emily. She was content in the car seat for a while. I held her for a while. Then I guess the other adults took turns, because I had to leave and go get Mom from where she was visiting Dad at the hospital. I think this was on Monday night.

Jane is VERY pleased with her roll of the ball.  Nick and Kaylee are so patient and kind, helping their littles to have good experiences.

Christmas 2021

Christmas was different this year. We had already planned for it to be small and low-key.  Eric and Matt planned to come for the morning and have brunch with us.  Christmas Eve, Mike and I were just watching movies and I planned to assemble our breakfast cassarole (lovingly referred to as "vegan" cassarole, since it is anything BUT vegan!). Instead, I ended up starting that and leaving it for Mike to finish and I spent the evening and night with Dad and Mom at the Emergency room and then the hospital.

The trip earlier in the month to the fun Christmas get-together and the celebration of his 90th birthday here in Cedar City really tired him out, and then he started coughing more, had no energy or appetite, had the runs and just felt awful. Matt Rynearson, PA, had briefly seen him in The Assisted Living Place Formerly Known as Brookdale ( Our House Assisted Living is the new name we cannot get used to) on Wednesday December 15, and he prescribed a round of antibiotics for him. So Dad did a Z-Pak for Wednesday through Sunday December 15 through 19 of that. No improvement and with more diarrhea from that medicine and the Mucinex we gave him for the cough. Mom and I took him to the InstaCare on Tuesday the 21 and they did a lung X-Ray which indicate no pnuemonia, yet that bad cough just persists.

Then we took him in to the ER on Friday night. He was so weak and just out of it.  They admitted him to the hospital that morning around 1 am and that's when I took Mom home to get some rest.

As they admitted him for observation that night/early morning, the medical history was being gathered. The first question they asked Dad was if he had any allergies and he said, "no", so I figured I'd better stay and make sure the CORRECT answers were being given.  I snoozed on the recliner off and on during the early morning.  In the morning I gave Mike directions on baking the cassarole. I came home for a couple of hours at noon to visit Eric and Matt and eat something, then got Mom and took her to the hospital to visit. They were supposed to let us know what was going on, but we'd missed the dr visit, they kept Dad for another night. And he's miserable. I didn't stay the night and neither did Mom. They just set up a camera monitor so he'd be safe.  So--Saturday night, Sunday night.  Then Monday they said they'd release him the next day IF he was able to walk. He couldn't. They kept him another day.  Finally on Wednesday he was released to go to Stonehenge, a skilled nursing facility right near the hospital.

I'm typing this on Thursday, so he's had all of one day there. And I think he's improving. They will be doing physical Therapy with him twice a day and occupational therapy once a day. Mom goes for daytime visits, he's on his own at night, poor guy. He doesn't communicate his needs and Mom's just so used to doing EVERYthing for him. He needs to be coaxed to eat, so she just feeds him. Still no appetite. But he's been up for a walk and he's exhausted. The diagnoses was viral pnueumonia, so it's going to take time to clear up. He needs to get back to where he was at Brookdale, able to walk into the bathroom and to the table to eat, and maybe even to bed to sleep.  That would be good. Strength and appetite is what they are shooting for.

Nick and Kaylee and kids drove down on Sunday. I didn't get to see much of them until night time and was gone a lot here and there during the day. But it was still a good visit with them and the kids. They ended up staying an extra couple of days so they could at least say "hi" and "bye" to Damian's family as they arrived in Utah on Tuesday night. Flights all over were being cancelled due to covid-affected crew shortages, and their flights were no exception. They scurried and found one. They are with the Kraley's from Texas, too.  It's a ski trip for them.

He went from looking like this on Christmas Eve in the afternoon, to this:

by nine pm when we took him to the ER. Quite a contrast.

I got these reversed. The picture above is Dad trying some lunch on Wednesday at Stonehenge. (he had about two bites).

Below is a view of him in his hospital bed. He spent basically FIVE days there, languishing in the bed and he was so tired of it.  Oxygen was about the only treatment. That, and rest.  Some nutrition. He just has no appetite.

Oh, Dear.  Those things happen. But he's UP!  and walking, so that's a good thing. He walked to the door of his large private room and back to the bathroom to get cleaned up and changed. They physical therapists did that and Dad was cooperative and succeeded in getting up and about for the first time in DAYS. That's progress. I spent a good chunk of Wednesday with him and his cough seems much improved.

Mom is mostly happy to be spending some time in the day with him. She can encourage him to eat his food.  She can rest on his bed if she wants. She can order from the dining services there, or get snacks from the fridge. I packed her some snacks today. She just had her back injection on Wednesday afternoon, so her blood sugar will be soaring. She got nuts and celery with peanut butter from me. I hope she eats it.

Clog Blog

I'm so glad Donna asked about this pair of wooden shoes on the dresser in our guest room.  They DO have an interesting story!

Mike's grandfather, John Liebhardt (1887-1982) was born in Hungary. His sister had emigrated to the US and John wanted to join his sister. John was the youngest of 13 children.  Only five of the 13 lived long lives.

Grandpa Liebhardt left Europe wearing these wooden clogs. He was about 20 years old at the time. They were not wealthy people, so he had to work his way to America. Once he got to the United states, wearing these wooden clogs, he landed in Baltimore and stayed there, working for a few years, earning money to get to Utah where his sister Barbara lived.  Eventually, he made it to Utah. He had training as an upholsterer, and that became his profession.  Mike's grandpa was 40 years old when he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He lived most of his life in the Provo, Utah area. He had a great love of the United States of America and cherished his citizenship.  The Fourth of July was his favorite holiday. He passed his cannons on to Mike and they get used, just like grandpa used them! Wake up the neighbors with a really big noise to celebrate all that makes our nation great! Mike's grandpa manufactured those cannons and they are a valued family heirloom.

A lot of our furniture was made by this grandfather. And we keep these shoes to help remind us that we come from good, sturdy, humble roots.  They make a nice addition to our "Liebhardt Guest Room," containing some of Mike's family pictures, one of his Mom's paintings etc.  I think that these shoes and the dresser scarf that was his Mom's are a nice addition to the room.

Sorensen Family Christmas Get-together

It has been a long-standing tradition for Aunt Tuny to host a Christmas time family get together. It has always been in california, where she lived. But now she lives in Utah with Sandi and Shawn in Saratoga springs. Sandi hosted they get together in their home this year. It was huge! There were lots of Sorensen descendants, most of whom came from Utah homes. But we had cousins who came from colorado, texas, georgia, Nevada. I think there were about 54 people there total. All of Sandi's family was there. My parents came, and all of their four children were there, along with spouses. We were so happy to see David! Donna's entire family came! Most of Robert's family was in attendance. We were only missing Tiffany and boys.  Only two of my children were able to come, Gail and Nick with their spouses and children. It would have been nice to get smaller groups photographed in front of the tree, but it was a little chaotic with that many people in their home. Sandy and Sean have a lovely large new home. There was lots of room to spread around. There was quiet areas for nursing babies, there was a toy area for children to gather, Aunt Tuny's apartment in the basement was open for games or TV or eating. It was so accommodating. We all had a great time. I drove Mom and Dad up and back. Shawn has a motorcycle ramp, so that was very convenient for getting dad's wheelchair in and out of the house. Plus, it helped having some strong strapping healthy young men to lend a hand.
